Elizabeth City, N.C. — A distinctive brass sound and a one-of-a-kind musical experience are coming to Elizabeth City as Elizabeth City State University’s (ECSU) Community Connections Performance and Lecture Series presents the Gateways Brass Collective Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Floyd L. Robinson Auditorium inside the Mickey L. Burnim Fine Arts Center.
The free performance will bring the artistry of the Gateways Music Festival to the Elizabeth City community for an evening of music curated especially for local audiences.
The Gateways Brass Collective has presented performances and educational programs since 2018. A resident ensemble of the Gateways Music Festival, an organization dedicated to spotlighting and empowering professional classical musicians of African descent, the quintet combines classical artistry, cultural inspiration and musical storytelling.
The ensemble features Herb Smith and Courtney Jones on trumpet, Larry Williams on horn, Isrea Butler on trombone and Jerome Stover on tuba.
Through the Community Connections series, ECSU continues its tradition of opening its doors to the region and creating opportunities for audiences to experience arts, culture, education and entertainment close to home. The performance offers community members an opportunity to experience the energy and distinctive sound of a brass ensemble while connecting with musicians whose artistry reaches beyond the concert stage.
The Community Connections Performance and Lecture Series brings engaging performers, speakers and experiences to ECSU and the surrounding community, strengthening the university’s connection to northeastern North Carolina through shared cultural and educational experiences. The series is sponsored and supported through a combination of ECSU student fees and a private donation from Phyllis Bosomworth, a former member of the ECSU Board of Trustees.
