Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most common crime that happens on campus?

Property crime accounts for the vast majority of on-campus crime. Usually these crimes occur due to property left unattended in public areas, unlocked rooms or offices. Our best advice is to never leave your property unattended and always lock your door. If you witness or become a victim of a crime it is extremely important that you report it immediately. Simply call University Police at 252-335-3266.

How can I get information pertaining to crimes reported to University Police?

Your safety and security is our number one priority. We have a zero tolerance for any offense of violence, to include drugs, alcohol and weapons violations. ECSU's Annual Security Report contains campus crime statistics for the past three years, detailed safety policies/procedures and other important information relative to campus safety and security.

In April of 2014, ECSU's accrediting body, the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (SACSCOC), reviewed ECSU's safety policies, procedures and compliance with federal safety laws. At the conclusion of their comprehensive review, SACSCOC made no recommendations to the University.

Is there a fee for parking on campus?

Parking for students is $100 for the academic year. The parking permit allows you to park in any area not designated by a "reserve" or "visitor" marker. You must register your vehicle with University Police, provide proof of insurance and display the parking decal at all times while on campus. Please visit the ECSU Parking Portal.   Additionally, all visitors are required to obtain a visitors' parking pass while on campus, which may be obtained from University Police.  Click here for further information.

In the event of an emergency, how will campus members be notified?

In an effort to provide timely notice to the university community, we encourage all students, faculty and staff to register their cell phones to receive emergency notifications. Please visit the Campus Safety webpage and sign up for ECSU Alert notifications. University Police will send out ECSU Alerts or crime warnings when there is an ongoing safety threat to students and employees. Emergency notices will be sent by email, audible message, text and posted to ECSU's Website.
