Elizabeth City, NC – In a historic step forward, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has granted Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) a certificate of authorization to fly its newest advanced drone across North Carolina.

ECSU collaborated with one of its partners, AeroX, to obtain the statewide clearance to operate a large-size drone, which opens new doors for advanced training and research opportunities. ECSU’s drone program will continue to partner with AeroX to test and explore diverse-use cases for the new drone.

The institution will use the drone for training with various real-world applications, including coastal monitoring, conservation, flood mapping, search and rescue, surveillance and reconnaissance and medical delivery, to name a few.

The ALTI Reach drone has vertical takeoff and landing capability to launch without a runway. With a wingspan of 16.4 ft. and payload carrying capacity of approximately 11 lbs., the drone’s flight endurance is more than 10 hours, and its telemetry and communication range is up to 90 miles.

Equipped with state-of-the-art sensors and technology and operated as part of the university’s Bachelor of Science Degree in Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) —the only four-year UAS degree program in North Carolina—the ALTI Reach drone will play a critical role in expanding research opportunities for students and faculty.

The university’s Department of Aviation and Emergency Management is expanding its research in ways previously uncharted, making ECSU a leader in drone technology and application.

As ECSU’s drone takes to the skies, so does the university’s aviation and UAS programs academic opportunities. With expanded operational capabilities come new partnerships, funding opportunities, and a chance for ECSU to continue its upward path as a hub for innovation in North Carolina.
