The ECSU Police Department and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) remain steadfast in their commitment to thoroughly investigating all available leads in the isolated April 27 shooting on campus. Additionally, the Elizabeth City Police Department and the Pasquotank County and Camden County Sheriff’s Offices are assisting ECSU Police and the SBI in relentlessly pursuing the person or people responsible.
The university continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of the campus community. In partnership with law enforcement partners, the following actions have been taken:

- Completed a security sweep of the crime scene immediately following the shooting
- Checked every building on campus
- Conducted meetings several times daily
- Followed up on multiple leads submitted by callers
- Visited every campus residence hall with university leadership
- Leveraged available technology to obtain information (i.e. surveillance cameras, recordings
submitted by witnesses, etc.)
Detectives have established an inbox where people who may have relevant information in the case can submit photos, videos and other related information that could assist in the investigation. This is an active and fluid investigation. Law enforcement officials will provide updates on any significant developments as soon as they can do so without compromising the investigation.
ECSU remains profoundly grateful for all agencies that have provided investigative support and protection to our students, faculty, staff, and visitors. All injured students have been treated and released from the hospital. Our thoughts remain with all victims, their families, and all affected by this tragedy. Our continued thoughts and prayers are also with the family and loved ones of Mr. Isaiah Caldwell, whose life was lost in the shooting.
Three days of remote learning culminated Friday, and final exams will be delivered remotely. Support services remain available for students, faculty, and staff.
