Elizabeth City, N.C. — Dr. S. Keith Hargrove officially stepped onto campus for his first day as chancellor of Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) June 16 and the Viking family showed up to make sure the moment made history, not just headlines.

Students, faculty, staff and community members gathered at 10 a.m. inside the Ridley Student Center’s Great Hall for a meet and greet that was more than a welcome. It was a new era in the institution’s history.

The event formally introduced the university to Hargrove, a seasoned academic leader passionate about growth and innovation. As attendees lined up to greet him, many remarked on his warm demeanor, confident vision and undeniable excitement to lead.

“As the outgoing chair of the board, it is my duty and honor to give the charge to our new Chancellor,” said Stephanie Johnson, Ph.D, chair of the ECSU Board of Trustees and the Chancellor Search Advisory Committee. “Your leadership will be instrumental in shaping the future of Elizabeth City State University, and we have full confidence in your ability to guide us toward a brighter and more prosperous future,” she said to Hargrove.

Though it was his first official day on the job, Hargrove wasted no time connecting with the campus community. From one-on-one conversations with student leaders on campus for the summer, to lighthearted exchanges with faculty, he made it clear that he’s not here to sit on the sidelines, but to suit up and lead.

“As I begin this role, I want you to know that I have the deepest respect for the work that has already been done, and a clear vision for how we can grow together. In the days and weeks ahead, I look forward to listening, observing and learning,” Hargrove said.

Hargrove’s arrival represents a takeoff moment. Known for his work in STEM education and workforce development, Hargrove brings a resume that is as grounded in academic excellence as it is in strategic growth. These two pillars align with ECSU’s reputation as a force in higher education.

“Elizabeth City State University has a rich legacy and an even greater future,” Hargrove shared during his address. “I’m honored to serve this community and look forward to working together as we grow.”

The symbolism wasn’t lost on the crowd. At a university that trains pilots, paves paths for future educators, and gives the arts a platform to shine, Hargrove’s leadership is a runway moment, and this morning’s welcome was the takeoff.

As the Ridley Student Center lit up with anticipation, conversation and even confetti poppers, it was clear: the Viking family wasn’t just meeting a new chancellor. They are rallying behind a shared vision.

Welcome aboard, Chancellor Hargrove. The future just landed.
